What is the difference between Foamex, Correx, Solid Core and Honeycomb boards?

Foamex (foam PVC) is lightweight and great for indoor displays. Correx is a fluted polypropylene board — waterproof, cheap and the go-to for estate agent boards and outdoor signs. Solid Core is a denser, tougher board suited to long-term commercial signage. Honeycomb is an eco-friendlier rigid board with a paper honeycomb core — lightweight but sturdy, ideal for exhibitions and sustainable campaigns.

What are Correx boards used for?

Correx boards are the standard material for estate agent for sale and to let boards, construction site signs, event wayfinding and short-term outdoor promotions. They are waterproof, lightweight and cost-effective for high-volume outdoor use.

Are Honeycomb boards eco-friendly?

Yes. 10mm Honeycomb boards have a recycled paper core and use significantly less plastic than foam PVC boards of the same thickness. They are a popular choice for brands running eco-conscious campaigns or exhibitions where sustainable materials are important.

What should I use for an event versus a permanent sign?

For short-term events, exhibitions or in-store promotions, 5mm or 10mm Foamex is lighter and easier to move around. For outdoor temporary use, 4mm Correx is cost-effective and weather-resistant. For permanent or long-term signage, 4mm Solid Core offers the best durability.

How quickly can you deliver printed boards?

They’re all rigid display boards, but they’re built differently and they behave differently:

5mm & 10mm foamboard — foam core between two paper liners. Lightest, sharpest print, indoor only.
4mm solid core (Foamex) — solid PVC sheet. Heaviest and toughest, fully waterproof, the outdoor one.
4mm Correx — fluted plastic, like plastic cardboard. Cheap, light, weatherproof, the estate-agent board.
10mm honeycomb — cardboard honeycomb core. Thick and rigid but light, and the most eco-minded option.

Rule of thumb: indoors and it needs to look sharp → foamboard. Outdoors and it needs to last → solid core. Outdoors on a budget → Correx.

For indoor use, 5mm or 10mm foamboard is almost always the right call.

5mm — posters, point-of-sale, presentations, short-term event signage. Light, easy to handle, still looks razor sharp.
10mm — when you want something chunkier and more premium, or a large panel that needs to stay flat on an easel.

If it’s going inside and it isn’t living there forever, foamboard is your best value option. If you want the thickness without the weight, 10mm honeycomb is the eco-minded swap.

Anything going outside wants 4mm solid core. It’s properly weather-resistant, won’t warp in sun, rain or temperature swings, and it’s the one to pick for shop fronts, wayfinding, building signage and anything semi-permanent.

If it’s facing British weather for more than a few weeks, go solid core.

Technically yes. Honestly, we’d rather you didn’t. Foamboard is designed for indoor use — outside it will warp or bow in heat and moisture, damages easily in wind, and generally has a short life. Expect weeks, not years.

One dry afternoon at an event — you’ll get away with it
Anything longer or less predictable — go solid core or Correx

Supply your design at the finished board size with 3mm bleed all round, ideally as a PDF. Keep important text and logos at least 5mm in from the edge, and flatten any transparency before you export — that’s the one thing that catches people out on large-format.

Try to use PDF

Save as PDF/X-1a:2001 for the most accurate print. Can’t? No stress — PNG, JPEG or whatever you have works, and the artwork team will get in touch if anything needs fixing (or maybe just for a chat if they’re feeling lonely).

Supply at finished size

Artwork at the actual board size with 3mm bleed all round. A1 = 594 × 841mm plus bleed. No crop marks needed, and please don’t send it scaled to 25% with a note.

Resolution

300dpi at full size on A3 and A2. On A1 and A0, 150dpi at full size is plenty — they’re read from two metres, not two inches. Use originals, not screenshots or WhatsApp exports.

Safe area

Keep text and logos 5mm in from the trim. Backgrounds should run right off the edge; the stuff that matters shouldn’t hug it. Boards are cut, and cutting moves a little.

Flatten transparency

The big one on large format. Live transparency looks perfect on screen and does genuinely strange things on a UV bed. Flatten before exporting and what you see is what you get.

Mind the viewing distance

An A0 board read across a room needs bigger type than you think — 60pt and up for headlines, nothing below 12pt. On an A3 counter card you can drop right down. Keep it above 6pt either way.
